Haiti Volunteer website gains traffic - some opptys now

So many people are asking about volunteer and paid opportunities to help in Haiti -- especially medical professionals who signed up with large recruitment drives and haven't been called yet.

There's a growing consensus that as this global effort grows - so quickly! - it would be very helpful to have a Craigslist-type bulletin board -- with diff categories -- that is live, interactive, and ideally, SMS text accessible from Haiti with geo-tracking/mapping.

The Ushahidi folks report being so busy with the great Haiti earthquake == crisis mapping -- that adding Service and Vols isn't possible yet. Their Haiti monitoring site and traffic is fast growing, and reports are being synched up with the SMS 4636 (from inside Haiti) text message bulletin system set up by Reuters Alert Net to allow survivors in (and outside) the country to freely text messages.

In the meantime, some great folks set up a blog www.haitivolunteers.org that is carrying information - volunteer posts, and organizations that may need volunteers. Here's the link.

Have a look and spread the word. The site is steadily gaining traffic. It's not yet easy to know which groups are seeking volunteers - but maybe this can grow.

One group is seeking people to leave tomorrow - out of Miami.
