Haiti Earthquake Update

SITUATION UPDATE
On 12 January at 16:53h local time (21:53h GMT) an earthquake
measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale (depth 10 km) hit a highly
populated area in Ouest Province of Haiti (population 2.2 million),
17km south-west of Port-au-Prince (18.45N, 72.45W). Carrefour
and Jacmel have also been affected.
On 16 Jan it was reported that the limited fuel supply is becoming
serious. The price for fuel in Haiti has increased to the equivalent
of 10 USD per gallon.

ROAD status (update from the WFP Regional Bureau in Panama):
• The road between Santo Domingo and Port-au-Prince is becoming more and more congested. UN
officials confirmed that convoys from Jimani (at the border) to Port-au-Prince will be escorted by
Dominican Civil Defence and MINUSTAH.
• Transit time between Cap Haitien and Port-au-Prince is one day.
• The road between Jacmel and Port-au-Prince is open to “all terrain” vehicles.
• The status of the road linking Barahona to the main road in Port-au-Prince (from Santo Domingo) is still
unknown.
IMMEDIATE NEEDS
• Search and rescue; emergency health; water and sanitation; shelter; food; logistics and telecommunications.
• Access to fuel continues to be an issue.
RESPONSE
• A Logistics Cluster meeting was held in Port-au-Prince on 16 Jan, with 30 participants attending.
Meetings will be held on a daily basis.
• The Logistics Cluster has made a request to the Government of the Dominican Republic for approval to establish a major humanitarian hub in Barahona as an alternate for channelling humanitarian relief cargo from Santo Domingo to Haiti.
• UNHAS established a passenger service from Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince (Cessna Caravan 208B, 10 pax). The first flight took place on 17 Jan.
Flight schedule: Week 18-22 Jan (Monday - Thursday): The plane will depart Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince at 08:00h. Passengers to check-in at 07:00h.
A new schedule will be announced for operations starting 23 Jan.

• Three Mobile Storage Units are already in Haiti and another ten are being shipped to supplement the storage capacity in Port-au-Prince.
• The MSB base camp arrived in Santo Domingo on 17 Jan. Onward delivery to Port-au-Prince will take place on 18 Jan.
