Day 9 - Thursday Jan 21

UPDATE Orphan Queries
I've been getting so many urgent pleas for help and information from US and Haitians in US asking who to contact about diff cases involving children who had some paperwork but not full adoptions, OR children now abandoned that they know in Haiti and want to apply to adopt.
Below is an EMAIL contact for those who have some paperwork or a connection that is in the works with a child needing adoption.
This does not apply for people who are moved now to adopt or provide foster care for an orphaned child in Haiti, or the child of a friend who's died, or one that your church has taken in, etc.
For all other cases, there will be a formal system of application, though plans are in the works for an expedited application process and this may be made public soon. The point is, a large-scale plan is being developed.
More on this soon. AGAIN: DO NOT EMAIL to contact BELOW unless you have a child you've been trying to adopt or help.
Note: The State Dept is urging people AGAINST flying to Haiti to try to get children, and to contact their office instead. (That said, many adoptive parents I know have gone there, and I'll update you on their efforts.
What's NEEDED urgently is better Public Information from the Key Agencies in charge and promotion of a hotline number for: a) pending adoptions b) pending foster placements c) interest in adopting d) interest in being foster parent.
NOTE: There is some activity on the foster care front. Update to come shortly. --AC

Interview on the Situation in Haiti and the Adoption of Haitian Children
Michele T. Bond
Deputy Assistant Secretary for Overseas Citizens Services
Washington, DC
January 19, 2010
Excerpted question:
QUESTION: How can parents follow up on children they are in the process of adopting?
DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY BOND: Some adoptive parents have asked us whether they should fly to Haiti to assist or collect their children. At this point, given the state of emergency in Haiti, we are advising against such travel.
Parents who are interested in following up on this and determining whether their own child is eligible to receive a visa and travel now or who want to know what they can do to get their child’s case processed can contact us at ASKCI@state.gov. So that is a-s-k-c-i@state.gov.
Again - ASKCI@state.gov
